YPRES / IEPER
YPRES SALIENT! Forever
seared into British memory!
Once a scene of
terrible destruction, where just under a million men were killed,
went missing and were injured in four years of the Great War! Born
of this nightmare were headline names such as Passchendaele,
Hooghe, Messines, Bellewaerde...
Against this
hopelessness of war we pitch the war poets: McCrae, Ledwidge, Hedd
Wyn, Grenfell... All lay or are commemorated here in Flanders
Fields! To visit the
battlefields of old and then recite Ledwidge's "Spring" at his
graveside on a beautiful spring morning, with the skylarks in full
chorus, is a must!
How else could Ypres
be awarded both the
Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre.
Today, Ieper/Ypres is
a beautiful, thriving market town, drowning in the Great War
history and tourism. Come and see it in all its glory, you will
not be disappointed!
The Li'lle Gate Guest House is located 100m from the Lille Gate, in
a quiet street in the oldest parish of Ypres, a short walk from
the Grote Markt and the Menin Gate.
